In the morning, I left to visit the town of Erice, the most medieval town in Italy. It sits on a mountain top and the road to get up the mountain was extremely winding. It’s famous for Maria’s Pastry Shop (Pasticceria Maria Grammatico) run by the first woman entrepreneur of Sicily.

Erice was a really pretty town and the views were simply stunning. And the Marsala wine that I tasted during my stay was amazing.

I then made my way to Marsala to visit a salt mill and learned how salt is pulled from the sea. It was an extremely windy day but the sunset was beautiful as it hovered over the piles of salt and the salt ponds. It truly is incredible how we take what nature provides to us and use it in or daily lives.

Then off to the hotel in Mazara del Vallo where I was so surprised to be staying in an “igloo” structure built on a converted “balio”, a converted fortified farm once owned by a baron. In this case, the igloos were built within the lemon and orange grove. What a fun place to sleep!
