This morning I made my way to Museo Nazionale Della Magna Grecia to see the famous “bronzi di riace” and artifacts from 8th century BC, plus Roman and prehistoric eras. The bronzi take your breath away. They are over 6 feet in height and are so detailed. They are incredible, especially because they were cast about 460-450 BC. They were found in 1972 in the sea near Riace, Calabria. The big urn reminded me of the one from my mom’s ancestral home. They are both from the same period of the 1700’s.
The museum was full of students from the surrounding schools. I would recommend not going on a Tuesday, if you want a quiet experience. After I finished my visit, I headed out to Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, a pedestrian only street full of boutique shops and small gelaterias (ice cream bars). I took in the sights and found some wonderful photo opportunities. My favorite is the photo with the school class going to the art gallery to see the Lego Exhibit.
In the evening, I took another walk along the boardwalk and sat on a bench to watch people enjoying an evening stroll. The clouds were rolling in so looks like tomorrow might bring rain. When the lamps switched on, it was magic.
